How Spelling Zappers Work (in 7 easy steps)
Full instructions on the use of Spelling Zappers are included in the Resource Pack download.
1. Introduce Spelling Zappers to your class
Talk about tricky words, and how it isn't always easy to remember how to spell them. Ask children to give you their experience of hard words, and any strategies they've found help.
2. Teach the Spelling Strategies
Spelling strategies are crucial to the success of Zappers. Children are more likely to retain tricky words if they are actively using strategies.
Posters illustrating and explaining the 4 spelling strategies are included in the Spelling Zapper Resource Pack.
3. Teach the 4Cs Multi-sensory Approach
Now teach the children the multi-sensory way of learning the word. How many senses can they use? The more the better...
4. Here we go Zapping!
When the children have learnt some words, they can have a zapping partner, and ask their partner to 'zap' them.
5. Award Certificates
Teachers can award certificates for achievements. Bronze, Silver & Gold Certificates plus suggestions for use are included in the Resource Pack download.
6. A Spelling or Dictionary Mat
Each time a child has completed a Zapper, they could record their words on a Spelling or Dictionary sheet. This provides a record of the words learnt.
7. Zapper Grids
Instead of having to have a new Zapper for the next set of words, simply use a blank paper grid and attach it on top of the old grid (sellotape or glue).
